Do’s & Don’ts of braces

At SmileBright Dental we have been offering orthodontic services for over ten years. We have dentists who have training in traditional metal braces, clear aligners and Invisalign. When you do get orthodontic treatment, especially braces, there are some do’s and don’ts that are important to follow.

Do’s:

  1. Brush your teeth regularly and thoroughly, especially after meals, to avoid plaque buildup and food particles becoming trapped in the braces.
  2. Floss daily to remove food particles from between the teeth and braces.
  3. Wear a mouthguard during sports to protect the braces and your teeth.
  4. Attend all scheduled appointments with your dentist or orthodontist to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments.
  5. Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that can damage the braces or dislodge wires and brackets.
  6. Drink plenty of water to help keep your mouth clean and hydrated.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid chewing on hard objects such as ice or pen caps, as this can damage the braces.
  2. Do not use your teeth to open packages or bottles, as this can put undue stress on the braces.
  3. Do not eat sugary or starchy foods in excess, as this can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  4. Do not neglect your oral hygiene routine, as this can lead to cavities and other oral health problems.
  5. Do not skip appointments with your dentist or orthodontist, as this can delay the treatment process and affect the final results.
  6. Do not ignore any discomfort or problems with the braces, as this can lead to more serious issues if left untreated.

Following these do’s and don’ts can help ensure the success of your orthodontic treatment and maintain good oral health during the process. If you would like to learn more about braces please feel free to contact our treatment coordinator on 3272 8833 or visit our website for a booking.
