The chewing surfaces of your back teeth are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay. This is because these surfaces have grooves and fissures that are designed to grind up food and which can often trap food and plaque bacteria. Fissure sealants are an easy way to protect these surfaces by completely sealing them and making them easier to keep clean.

What Are Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants consist of a thin layer of flowable resin material that is simply painted onto clean tooth surfaces. The sealant bonds strongly with the tooth and soon hardens, creating a smooth and nearly invisible surface. This will completely seal the tooth surface, preventing bacteria from causing decay.

How Long Will Fissure Sealants Last?

Fissure sealants should last for several years but we will regularly check their condition and can replace them as required.

Can Fissure Sealants Protect Teeth That Already Have Cavities?

Unfortunately fissure sealants are only suitable for teeth that are cavity free and this is why we generally recommend their application for children whose adult back teeth have just erupted. If your teeth already have fillings or cavities then this treatment will not be suitable. Very occasionally, it might be possible to use fissure sealants to seal teeth that have tiny lesions as sealing in the bacteria can prevent the decay from spreading.
