New Patient Dental Examination in Sunnybank Hills

At SmileBright Dental Sunnybank Hills, we understand that many patients searching for a new dentist are often looking for what is commonly referred to as a “check-up and clean.”

However, the reality is that a check-up and clean can mean very different things from one dental practice to another.

At SmileBright Dental, we prefer to think of your first visit as the beginning of a long-term partnership focused on maintaining your oral health. Rather than simply providing a quick examination and clean, our goal is to thoroughly understand your oral health, identify any concerns early, provide education about your findings, and help you make informed decisions about your dental care.

This philosophy forms the foundation of our Preventative Care Program and reflects our belief that the best dentistry is often the dentistry that never becomes necessary because problems were identified and managed early.

Why is a comprehensive examination important?

Many dental conditions develop slowly and often without pain and many oral health conditions become progressively more difficult to manage as they advance.

For example:

Unfortunately, many patients only become aware of a problem once discomfort develops. By this stage, treatment is often more complex than if the condition had been identified earlier.

A comprehensive examination allows us to assess your oral health, identify early signs of disease, establish a baseline for future monitoring, and help prevent problems from progressing unnecessarily.

At SmileBright Dental, our purpose as healthcare providers is not simply to treat dental disease, but to prevent problems before they arise.

What happens during a New Patient Examination?

Many patients are unsure what to expect when attending their first appointment. At SmileBright Dental, our goal is to make the experience comfortable, informative, and focused on helping you understand your complete oral health. We hope that we leave SmileBright knowing everything there is to know and have all your questions answered.

Every patient is different; however, your first visit will generally follow the same process.

Step-By-Step

New Patient Examination Process

Step 1 – Understanding you and your concerns

We begin by getting to know you. Your dentist will spend time with you and get to know you personally. Discuss your medical history, dental history, any concerns you may have, and what you would like to achieve from your dental care.

Whether you are experiencing pain, have concerns about your teeth, or simply want to maintain your oral health, understanding our patients helps us provide custom and personalised care.

Your dentist will perform a thorough examination and comprehensive full mouth oral examination

Starting with the soft tissues including an oral cancer screening and examination of the health of the gums—for signs of gum disease, recession, or bone loss.

Then your dentist will examine all your teeth comprehensively assessing and examining for any chips, cracks, or decay. The function, aesthetics and even how your teeth bite together are all assessed during this stage.

This examination helps identify existing dental conditions while also screening for potential future concerns and areas that we can prevent problems for they happen.

We take detailed intra-oral photographs to help document your oral health and allow you to clearly see what we see. We will always keep dental records forever to ensure we are able to compare with new images in the future to assess for changes or concerns.

We strongly believe patients should be able to visualise and understand their oral health rather than simply being told about it.

Using our state-of-the-art iTero Lumina scanner, we may even create a highly detailed 3D digital model of your teeth and mouth.

This allows us to monitor changes over time, assess tooth wear, crowding, bite issues, and create an accurate baseline for your future dental care.

Depending on your individual needs, focused dental X-rays, OPG full mouth x-ray, or CBCT 3D imaging may be recommended.

These images allow us to assess areas that cannot be seen with the naked eye, helping us diagnose your conditions more accurately and plan treatment more effectively.

This is one of the most important parts of the appointment.

Your dentist will take the time to explain their findings, show you photographs and scans, answer any questions you may have, and discuss recommendations if treatment is required.

Our goal is to ensure you understand your oral health and feel confident   to make informed decisions regarding your care.

At SmileBright Dental, we believe preventative dentistry is built on education, transparency, communication, and trust. We want every patient to leave with a clear understanding of their oral health and confidence in the care they have received.

Although we normally take the time to understand our patients’ full circumstances rather than focusing on cleaning, where appropriate, professional cleaning will be performed using ultrasonic scalers and modern air-polishing technology such as our Prophy-Mate system.

Many patients refer to this as a “clean,” however in reality, professional cleaning plays an important role in maintaining oral health. The primary goal is to remove calculus, which is hardened mineralised plaque that accumulates in areas that cannot be effectively cleaned through brushing alone.

This bacterial build-up can contribute to gum inflammation, bleeding, gum disease, and irreversible bone loss around the teeth if left unmanaged. Using ultrasonic scalers and modern air-polishing technology such as our Prophy-Mate system, we can comfortably remove these deposits while helping maintain healthier gums and supporting long-term oral health.

Advanced technology for better diagnosis

SmileBright Dental continually invests in advanced technology to improve both patient experience and diagnostic accuracy.

These technologies allow us to identify conditions that may not be visible to the naked eye while helping patients better understand their own oral health.

We believe patients make better decisions when they can clearly see and understand what is happening in their mouth.

Our practice utilises modern digital technology including:

iTero Lumina digital scanning

Digital intra-oral X-rays

OPG panoramic imaging

CBCT 3D imaging where required

Intra-oral photography

There is absolutely no judgement at SmileBright Dental. Our team is focused on helping patients move forward with their oral health in a supportive and positive environment.

Many patients feel this way. Our team places a strong emphasis on communication, warmth, and support to help create a calm and comfortable experience.

Appointments are generally around an hour to ensure our clinicians can spend their time with our patients and ensure everything is comprehensively taken care of.

Only when clinically appropriate. X-rays help identify problems that cannot be seen during a visual examination alone or every 2 years.

Where appropriate, professional cleaning may be performed as part of your visit. If more extensive treatment is required, your dentist will discuss the best approach.

Any relevant medical information, medication lists, previous dental records, health insurance cards and any questions or concerns you would like to discuss.
