How to create healthy tooth brushing habits in kids

Creating healthy oral health habits in kids is essential for their oral hygiene and overall health.

At SmileBright Dental we have over 25 years of experience in children dentistry and have had seen the impacts of how poor oral hygiene can effect our children. Following the steps below can help to establish healthy tooth brushing habits.

  1. Start early: Begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as their first tooth appears, typically around six months of age. This helps them get used to the routine and makes it easier to establish good habits later on.
  2. Make it fun: Tooth brushing doesn’t have to be a chore. Play fun music or sing a song while brushing to make it more enjoyable for your child. You can also let them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste.
  3. Use age-appropriate toothbrushes and toothpaste: Make sure you are using a toothbrush and toothpaste that is appropriate for your child’s age. Younger children may need a smaller brush and special toothpaste that is safe to swallow. Also spend time trying to find a flavour that your child enjoys.
  4. Brush twice a day: Encourage your child to brush their teeth twice a day, in the morning and before bed. Make sure they brush for at least two minutes each time.
  5. Supervise: Until your child is old enough to brush their teeth on their own, supervise their brushing to make sure they are doing it properly. Show them how to brush all surfaces of their teeth and gums.
  6. Set a routine: Establish a consistent routine for tooth brushing so that it becomes a habit. This could include brushing after breakfast and before bedtime, for example.
  7. Lead by example: Children often learn by example, so make sure you are modeling good tooth brushing habits for your child. Brush your teeth with them and make it a family activity.
  8. Introduce your dentist: Lets make your child’s first dental visit fun! Do not wait until a problem arises, bring your child in to meet your family dentist, explore the dental chairs and get use to the sounds that occur.

We always want to explore the best possible options for our children, by following these tips, you can help your child establish healthy tooth brushing habits that will benefit them for a lifetime.
